Size and fit
Size and fit
Sizes have changed over the decades, so a label's size is only a starting point: a 12 from the 1960s often fits like a modern 8. Every piece lists three things:
- Label: the size printed on it, as it is.
- Fits like: the size it fits like today, from XXS to XXL, judged on a dress form.
- Measurements: taken flat, in centimetres.
Our measurements
- Pit to pit: straight across the front, from one underarm seam to the other. Double it for the bust.
- Waist: straight across at the narrowest point. Double it for all the way round.
- Length: from the top of the strap, or the shoulder, to the hem.
For bridal gowns we add the train when there is one.
Compare with something you own
Lay a slip or dress that fits you well flat, and measure it the same way. That's the surest guide. Silk cut on the bias has a little give across the body; lace and woven fabric have almost none.
On the catalogue, Size lets you choose the sizes you wear, and we'll remember them on this device.
